Traveller’s question

Arriving in Bishkek: the first 24 hours

What to do from the exit of Manas Airport to the marshrutka to Karakol: how to get into town, where to get a SIM and som, where to spend the night and how to leave in the morning. Prices in som are from 2025–2026 reports, last checked on 14 October 2026; where sources disagree, we write “usually X, sometimes Y”.

Manas

What you find outside Manas Airport

The airport is about 23 km from the centre. In 2026 there was construction nearby, so stops and the approach road may move.

Arrivals hall
Mobile operator kiosks and several ATMs are in the arrivals hall, so you can get a SIM before you go out. Opening hours are not guaranteed: early one morning one counter was closed while another was working. check for your date
Internet
In 2026 no working Wi-Fi was found near the exit, and the taxi app needs internet. So it is better to buy a SIM before you leave the hall. check for your date
Where to go
The pick-up area for apps and the bus stop were to the right of the entrance, about 5–7 minutes on foot. Because of the construction, check the pick-up point in the app and on the signs. check for your date
Street drivers
In the pick-up zone drivers name a price straight away: 1,200–3,000 som, against 500–1,000 in the app. Compare the price with the app and do not accept the first offer. check for your date

The road

How to get to the centre of Bishkek

The ride takes about 30–40 minutes without traffic; allow an hour on the way to the airport.

OptionPrice, somWhat to consider
Taxi via an app (Yandex Go and others)500–1 000Pricier by day and at rush hour, usually cheaper at night. There may be a wait of about 10 minutes. The app needs internet; you pay by card or in cash.
Official taxi from the counterusually 600–800, sometimes 400–1,300The price is named at the counter, and sources disagree. Suitable for a night arrival, but the counter is not always staffed.
Shuttle Go Bus120–200By day every 30–60 minutes, about an hour on the road. Check the timetable on the spot.
Bus 153140–150According to one source: every 15 minutes, pay in cash or by card, the stop is to the right of the airport. Check this.
Marshrutka 38050–70The cheapest, running roughly from 6:30 to 21:00, not at night, and crowded with luggage. Drivers sometimes say there is no service.

A pre-booked transfer costs about 20 USD for three people. At night choose an app or a counter, not a street driver.

Connectivity

SIM and internet

The mobile operators in the country are O!, Beeline and MegaCom.

Where to buy
In the arrivals hall at the operators’ kiosks and in their offices in town. A SIM is issued against a passport in about five minutes. check for your date
How much it costs
Small packages cost about 200–500 som for 4–10 GB, large ones more: 1,500 som for 250 GB. A card was accepted at the counter. check for your date
eSIM
Install it in advance or right after landing, when the phone picks up the local network. “Traveller” eSIMs can cost several times more than local ones and have worse coverage outside Bishkek. check for your date
In the mountains
Coverage in the mountains is patchy: a SIM does not replace an offline map and a route shared with your hosts. See independent travel guide.

Som

Exchanging money and ATMs

For the first day you need a little som: for a taxi, food and a SIM.

ATMs
There are several at the airport, but not all work with foreign cards: if one refuses, try another. Visa is accepted more often than Mastercard. check for your date
How much to withdraw
3,000–5,000 som is enough for the first day. The limit per transaction is usually 20,000–25,000 som, and the fee is about 2%. Large notes are hard to change. check for your date
Exchange
At the airport the rate is usually worse than at banks and exchange offices in town. Change only enough for the journey, and the rest at a licensed bank or bureau in Bishkek. check for your date
Dollars
Bring clean notes of recent series: older ones may be refused. The National Bank rate is a guide, not a mandatory price for a deal. check for your date

Where to stay

Where to spend the first night

We do not name hotels: look at the area and the reception hours. Everything below is a guide based on maps and accommodation listings.

The centre by Ala-Too Square
The simplest choice, close to Victory Square, Panfilov Park, cafés and exchange offices. The ride from the airport takes about 35 minutes.
Late arrival
Choose accommodation with a 24-hour reception and arrange a meeting or a transfer in advance. Check-in rules differ from place to place, so ask before you fly. check for your date
If you leave early
From the centre to the new bus station there is bus no. 13 (20 som) or a taxi for 300–400 som. You do not have to stay near the station. check for your date
Booking
In July–August accommodation and tickets to Issyk-Kul sell out earlier. Book the first night before you fly.

The next day

Issyk-Kul and Karakol the next day

Services to Issyk-Kul leave from the new bus station (Almatinskaya 1/1): the west bus station was reported closed in 2026. Check the departure point at the ticket office.

OptionTimePrice, somWhat to consider
Marshrutka or bus from the bus station6–8 hours500–600 with luggageThey leave when full, usually from 7 a.m. The north shore is faster. Buy your ticket at the ticket office, not from the driver. To Cholpon-Ata it is cheaper: 250–400.
Shared taxifaster than a marshrutkaabout 700 per seatYou find them at the station. The price and departure depend on how many passengers there are.
Taxi at the station5–7 hours1,000–1,500 to the shoreThe price is agreed in advance. To Karakol it is more: a private driver “door to door” cost about 120 USD and up.
Night bus GoBus7–8 hours600–700Departs from Victory Square. It does not run all year, so check in the app.
Train to Balykchy and a marshrutkaabout 4 hours and 4.5 hoursabout 800 and 350The train is seasonal, one service a day. To Karakol you also need marshrutka no. 300.

In July–August there are queues at the station, so arrive early. The south shore is served less often, and marshrutkas there often stop running by midday.
