A 3-hour culture walk around Karakol
Five sights within a kilometre of the cathedral: Holy Trinity Cathedral, the Karakol History Museum, the Karakol Tatar Mosque, the Dungan Mosque and Bugu Bazaar with its ashlyanfu lane. The walk along the streets is 2.6 km; with sightseeing, allow 3–4 hours. Start in the morning and finish with lunch. Visit Przhevalsky Museum separately; it is 15 minutes away by taxi.

Holy Trinity Cathedral
A wooden Orthodox church from 1895 with gilded domes and carving, set in a garden. The main landmark of the centre.

Karakol History Museum
The history of Issyk-Kul in an 1887 merchant’s house: archaeology, crafts and nomadic life, with a collection of about 14,000 objects.

Karakol Tatar Mosque
A nineteenth-century mosque with a blue dome. In Soviet times it housed a cinema.

Dungan Mosque
A wooden mosque built in 1907–1910 without a single nail: carved dragons, bright gables and a tower-like minaret.

- Daily, during the day check for your date. During prayer, tourists are not allowed into the hall; on Friday around noon there is Friday prayer.

- 20–50 som, as a cash donation.
- Etiquette
- Shoes are left at the threshold. Women should cover their arms, legs and head; robes are handed out at the entrance.

Bugu Bazaar and the ashlyan-fu lane
Karakol’s small bazaar. Across the road is a covered lane where people eat ashlyan-fu, a Dungan soup.

Walking tips
When and how
- Start in the morning: the cathedral is quieter, the museum opens at 9–10 check for your date.
- E Fridays around midday the Dungan Mosque holds Friday prayers, so come before or after.
- For the cathedral and the mosques, bring a headscarf and clothes that cover your shoulders and knees.
- Admission to the Dungan Mosque is a cash donation, 20–50 som.
- Finish with lunch: people eat ashlyan-fu in the lane opposite Bugu Bazaar.
- E Sunday morning, add the livestock market: 7–11, on the edge of town.
