Three words

Place, route, base

A place is a point
A museum, a waterfall, a mosque, a pass: somewhere you can go and see something. The place card says when it is open and how to get there.
A route is an outing of a day or more
A natural outing from a base: a gorge, meadows, a lake. Time, altitude, season, whether a permit is needed.
A base is where you spend the night
A town or village you set out from by day: Bishkek, Karakol, Kochkor, Naryn. Choose a base first, then the places and routes around it.

What not to do

Six first-timer mistakes

  • Underestimating distances The map is deceptive: mountain roads are slow, and 200 km is half a day. Allow a spare day.
  • Going up too fast Landing and sleeping at 3,000 m is a recipe for a headache. Bishkek and Issyk-Kul first, yurts later.
  • Too little cash ATMs outside the cities are rare. Withdraw som in Bishkek.
  • Forgetting the permit Alay, Kol-Suu and a number of other places require permission. Check the route card in advance.
  • Heading into the mountains in winter unprepared Passes and the roads to Song-Kol are closed in winter. In winter, go to Karakol and ski.
  • Flying home the same evening Delays on the roads are normal. Leave a margin of three hours, or stay the night.
