Traveller’s question
Independent travel in Kyrgyzstan: how to plan your trip
You can travel independently in Kyrgyzstan if you check entry rules for your passport in advance and avoid relying solely on maps and mobile reception to plan your route. In cities, use a bank card alongside cash in som. For the mountains, download offline maps, arrange overnight stays and share your route with family or friends beforehand. Intercity options include buses, marshrutkas (fixed-route minibuses), a train to Balykchy and app-based taxis, but check schedules, departure points and prices for your date. For remote treks, allow extra time, arrange insurance covering your altitude, obtain a border-zone permit where required and plan how to stay in touch.

Entry and border zones
Start with your country of citizenship and passport type: there is no single rule for every traveller.
- Countries in Annex 1
- For ordinary passports from the main EU markets, the UK, US, Canada, South Korea and Japan, the standard rules from 2026 allow a total of up to 30 calendar days in each 60-day period. Before travelling, select your country and passport type on the visa portal.
- Other groups of countries
- Allowances differ: EAEU — 90/180; Uzbekistan — 60/120; Serbia, Turkey, Ukraine and Mongolia — 90/180; the six listed Gulf countries — 180/360. For any other passport, use the visa portal rather than applying the 30/60 rule.
- e-Visa
- If visa-free entry does not apply, check eligibility for an e-Visa on the visa portal. Complete the application in English; you need a passport, a digital photo and a bank card. After you correct documents, a new five-day processing period starts; avoid buying a ticket before approval.
- Registration
- Registration depends on citizenship, passport type, the grounds for your stay and its length. Before travelling, check the exemption and deadline for your specific passport; do not rely on a general five-day estimate. check for your date
- How to get a border-zone permit
- A border-zone permit requires an application or formal request, a passport and evidence of your purpose. Do not plan around the administrative minimum: allow at least 5–12 days, and up to 3–4 weeks in high season. check for your date
- Sary-Jaz, Engilchek and Khan Tengri
- A border-zone permit is required. Send the operator a clear passport scan, exact dates and areas; allow at least 5–12 days, or a safer 3–4 weeks in peak season. check for your date
- Routes near the Chinese border
- A permit is required for designated areas on routes to Sary-Jaz, Engilchek, Kol-Suu and Chatyr-Kol, and for certain sections near Irkeshtam and Torugart. Crossing the border and entering a border zone are separate procedures. check for your date
- Tash Rabat
- There is no information on whether a permit is required for an ordinary visit to Tash Rabat without continuing towards Torugart or Chatyr-Kol. Check your exact route with the operator arranging the permit. no data
Payment
Money
A bank card is useful in the city, but work out your cash budget in som before heading to a remote area.
- Bank card or cash
- Cards and QR payments are common in Bishkek and other major cities, but marshrutkas, markets, some guesthouses and yurts, and rural businesses take cash in som. Avoid relying solely on a bank card for a remote route. check for your date
- Visa and Mastercard
- Main cities have ATMs. Visa is more widely accepted; Mastercard does not work everywhere, although some banks support it. Check the network logos and bring a second card. check for your date
- Limits and fees
- Limits depend on the bank and ATM; around 10,000 som per withdrawal is one indicative amount. KICB’s 2025 tariff for foreign cards listed 300 som, 3 USD or 3 EUR, in addition to any fee charged by the card’s issuing bank. check for your date
- ATMs at weekends
- There is no information establishing a general rule that ATMs are out of service or empty at weekends. Withdraw cash before heading to a remote area and avoid depending on a single ATM. no data
- Currency exchange
- Exchange foreign cash for som only at a licensed bank or exchange bureau. The National Bank of the Kyrgyz Republic’s rate is a reference, rather than a mandatory rate for every transaction.
- US dollars
- Bring clean, undamaged banknotes from newer series: notes issued before 2007 may be refused or exchanged for an additional fee. check for your date
- Transfers through apps
- Local apps offer international transfers, but often require an account and identity verification. Fees, available countries and top-ups with a foreign card change. check for your date
- How much cash to take into the mountains
- There is no universal amount. Add up transport, accommodation, meals, horses and all expenses on the section where cards cannot be used, then add a separate reserve. no data
Phone
Mobile reception
A SIM helps in cities, but does not replace an offline map and a route plan shared beforehand.
- O! SIM and eSIM
- O! registers SIMs for foreign visitors using a passport from any country and sells eSIMs online. The eSIM activates after arrival, once your phone connects to the local mobile network. check for your date
- Beeline
- Beeline advertises a package for 330 som until 31 December 2026. When buying, check the current terms, package validity and registration with a foreign passport. check for your date
- MEGA
- You can activate an eSIM through MegaPay after identity registration or at a service centre. Issuing it was free with a paid plan; in August 2026, Mega Unlimited cost 330 som for 4 weeks. check for your date
- Where to buy
- Use the operator’s app, eSIM service or official service centre. Register a physical SIM with your own passport; avoid buying a number registered to someone you do not know.
- Sary-Jaz valley
- There is almost no reception along the route; only O! coverage is noted in Engilchek. This describes one route and does not guarantee reception at every point. check for your date
- All areas without reception
- There is no complete list covering every operator and trail. For remote valleys, download maps, share your route and avoid treating a coverage map as a guarantee of reception. no data
Between cities
Transport
Departure points, last services and payment methods change; confirm them before setting off.
- Bishkek bus stations
- As of 30 April 2026, services to Naryn and Issyk-Kul regions left from the new bus station at 1/1 Almatinskaya Street; western routes left from the temporary Ak-Kula departure point. Check where to board before travelling. check for your date
- Timetable
- The Ministry of Transport publishes intercity services, but the table has no visible validity date. Use it as a starting point and confirm departure at the ticket office or information desk on your travel day. check for your date
- Bishkek–Karakol
- Direct services between Bishkek J Karakol run along the north and south shores of Issyk-Kul. Check the schedule, fare, departure point and last return service before travelling. check for your date
- Shared taxis
- There is no single current list of departure points, fares and departure rules. Price and departure depend on gathering passengers; avoid relying on an old taxi stand. no data
- Yandex Go
- The app shows cash or card payment and an estimated fare. It lists Bishkek, Osh, Jalal-Abad, Karakol and Tokmok; trips beyond these cities are not guaranteed. check for your date
- Other apps
- Other taxi apps listed in 2024 include InDrive, Navi Taxi, Jorgo and Bi Taxi. Before travelling, check whether the app is available and cars operate in your city. check for your date
- Train to Balykchy
- The Bishkek–Balykchy train is an option for a seasonal trip to western Issyk-Kul, but you need road transport to continue to Karakol. In 2026, tickets were sold online and seasonal or extra services were scheduled. check for your date
- Paying for an intercity trip
- There is no single payment rule for ticket offices, marshrutkas and shared taxis. Carry cash and check how to pay before boarding. no data
Driving
Car hire
Hiring a car gives you freedom, but check documents, insurance cover and mountain pass conditions for your own route.
- Driving licences
- Requirements depend on the country of issue. A British photocard licence can be used for up to 30 days without an IDP; after that, both the licence and a 1968 IDP are required. Check the rules separately for licences from other countries. check for your date
- Road rules and insurance
- Drive on the right, wear seat belts and observe the zero alcohol limit. Third-party liability insurance is compulsory; rental insurance must cover your declared roads and drivers.
- Self-drive hire
- Offers in 2026 varied widely: economy cars 45–65 USD per day, AWD 65–85, 4x4 100–130, with a 300–500 USD deposit. Another rental company listed some cars from 85–100 USD and 4x4s from 105–150 USD. check for your date
- Car with a driver
- There is no comparable all-inclusive price covering the car, fuel and the driver’s accommodation and meals. Agree everything included and the total before paying. no data
- Roads
- Away from main roads, surfaces and lighting can be poor, and weather can quickly change whether a route is passable. In winter, you need winter tyres, chains and extra time; check recent updates before crossing mountain passes. check for your date
- When passes open
- There is no single calendar: Chon-Ashuu and other roads open and close depending on snow, avalanches and roadworks. Check the specific road and date. no data
Stays and local help
CBT and accommodation
CBT is useful when you want to arrange a host family, yurt, guide, horses, transport or border-zone permit in one enquiry.
- What is CBT?
- Community Based Tourism is a network of local groups and family businesses brought together by the Hospitality Kyrgyzstan association. The network lists 17 communities.
- How to book
- Contact the national contact point or a regional office. Put your dates, group size, meals, transfers, permit and cancellation terms in writing.
- Yurts and guesthouses
- Remote high-altitude camps are usually seasonal and have no single inventory showing instant availability. For July–August or a route without a tent, check your overnight stay, heating, toilet facilities, meals and payment in advance. check for your date
- Guides and horses
- A regional CBT office or guesthouse can arrange a guide, horses, accommodation and transport. Before paying, discuss riding experience, helmets, a pack horse, the guide’s language, meals and a bad-weather plan. check for your date
- Standard CBT prices
- There is no single current nationwide tariff for a guesthouse, yurt, guide or horse. Compare specific offers for your dates with everything included. no data
Before going offline
Language and apps
Download a translation app and maps before leaving the city, and save addresses in Russian or Kyrgyz.
- Languages
- Kyrgyz is the state language; Russian is used as an official language. Outside tourism serving English speakers, Russian is usually more practical than English, although an individual may not speak it.
- English
- There is no recent overall assessment covering cities, villages, guesthouses and guides. Prepare a translation app and addresses in Russian or Kyrgyz. no data
- Offline translation
- Google Translate lets you download available language packs. Before leaving, download and open the language pair you need on your phone: availability depends on the version and device. check for your date
- 2GIS
- In supported cities, downloaded data provides a map, directory and some routes. Available data and functions depend on the city, version and internet connection. check for your date
- Road and trail maps
- Download the region in Organic Maps or Maps.me in advance. Google Maps offers offline driving directions, but cannot plan walking, cycling or public transport routes without a connection. check for your date
Before a trek
Luggage
The most reliable option is to arrange storage with your accommodation in advance and get written confirmation.
- Bishkek bus station
- The bus station’s rules mention luggage storage. Check which currently operating building it belongs to, its hours, price and maximum storage period. check for your date
- Bishkek airport
- There is no information on passenger luggage storage with current opening hours and prices. no data
- A hostel in Karakol
- Karakol based Hostel lists a free storage room and lockers for guests. Agree your trekking dates in writing, particularly if you have paid for accommodation only before or after the trek. check for your date
- Public luggage storage in Karakol
- There is no information on publicly available luggage storage in the city with hours and fees. Arrange storage with your guesthouse or hostel. no data
Mountains and health
Safety
For Lake Ala-Kol, Altyn-Arashan and other remote routes, a communication and evacuation plan matters more than the forecast at the start.
- Emergency number
- In an emergency, call 112, Kyrgyzstan’s single emergency dispatch service.
- Ambulance
- Call 103 for an ambulance, or 112 for a general emergency. check for your date
- Altitude
- Altitude sickness is a real risk. Avoid a rapid ascent straight after arrival, allow time to acclimatise and descend if symptoms worsen.
- Insurance
- Your policy must explicitly cover your route’s altitude, planned trekking, horse riding or skiing, as well as medical evacuation and repatriation. check for your date
- Communication and rescue
- On remote treks, reception is weak; weather, avalanches, landslides and rockfall can block the route, and rescue capacity is limited. Avoid going alone, share your route and expected return time, and carry an offline map and suitable communication equipment. check for your date
- Drinking water
- There is no single answer for the whole country. In the mountains, filter or boil water from unfamiliar places; in the city, choose sealed bottled water if unsure. no data
- Medical care
- Outside major cities, facilities are limited, some medicines may be unavailable and you may need to pay in cash. Bring your regular medication and know its international name. check for your date
Seasons and regions
When to go
Compare the country’s seasons and choose a region: Chuy, Issyk-Kul, Naryn, Osh, Batken, Jalal-Abad or Talas.
- Spring · March–May
- Valleys warm up earlier, but snow remains in the mountains. Avoid assuming that a high-altitude route is automatically open early in the year. check for your date
- Summer · June–August
- The main season for mountains and high-altitude lakes; the Bishkek and Osh valleys are hot. Even in summer, snow and sudden weather changes are possible at altitude. check for your date
- Autumn · September–November
- September still suits many mountain plans, then temperatures fall quickly. Snow is possible in the high mountains as early as September. check for your date
- Winter · December–February
- Ski season and freezing high mountains. Road passes may close temporarily because of snow and avalanches. check for your date
