Getting around Kyrgyzstan: between bases — time, mode, price
There are almost no timetables in the country: marshrutkas and shared taxis leave when enough passengers have turned up, and the price is named by the driver or the ticket office. So what follows is not a timetable but a set of guideposts: how long the journey takes, what you pay, where to board and what gets in the way in winter. The figures are drawn from travellers’ reports, news and carriers’ pages for 2025–2026. Where there are two confirmations and they agree, we give a range; where there is one source or the data is old, we say so and ask you to check on the day. Before setting off, ask the driver the price before you board, and keep som in cash.

How journeys work
Four rules that explain almost everything in the tables below.
- “It leaves when it fills up”
- Marshrutkas and shared taxis do not run to a timetable: the driver waits until the car is full. On Bishkek — Karakol one author estimates the flow at roughly one car an hour during the day. check for your date
- Pay after boarding
- The price is stated before departure, and you pay the driver once the car is full. In a shared taxi you can buy the empty seats and leave earlier. Cash in som is needed almost everywhere. check for your date
- Bishkek’s bus stations
- As of 30 April 2026, services to Naryn and Issyk-Kul regions left from the new bus station at Almatinskaya 1/1, and western destinations from the temporary stop “Ak-Kula”. GoBus coaches to Osh and Talas board at the “Pishpek” car park at Togolok Moldo 17/1. Check the boarding point before you travel. check for your date

- The service lists Bishkek, Osh, Manas (formerly Jalal-Abad), Karakol and Tokmok; an intercity trip in the app is not guaranteed. The departure hall at Manas airport has no working Wi-Fi, so it is better to arrange a SIM or eSIM in advance. check for your date

- On routes to Almaty and Tashkent, and on the bus to Talas, which according to the carrier goes through Kazakhstan, you need a passport and the right of entry for your nationality. Check it in advance. check for your date
Bishkek and the lake
Bishkek — Karakol, Cholpon-Ata, Karakol — Karkara
The north shore is the fast road without passes; the south is less frequent and slower.

Bishkek — Naryn, Kochkor — Song-Kol, Naryn — Tash Rabat
The road runs through Balykchy, Kochkor and the Dolon Pass; in winter Dolon is sometimes closed.

The Dolon Pass between Kochkor and Naryn: on 20 February 2023 it was closed while avalanches were brought down, and the reopening time depended on the volume of the slide. For the Song-Kol season and road conditions to the lake outside summer, ask CBT Kochkor.

Bishkek — Osh is the longest road in the country; a flight saves a day but depends on the weather.

According to a 2025 description, the Bishkek — Osh road is open all year, but snow above the Too-Ashuu Pass at over 3000 m can close it for hours or days. In 2026 the section at kilometres 130–146 on the pass is being repaired.
Suusamyr, Talas and beyond

According to the carriers, Talas and Tashkent are reached through Kazakhstan, and Almaty through the Kordai border crossing.

What gets in the way in winter
Closures on the passes last hours or days, and there is no single calendar.
- Dolon (Bishkek — Naryn)
- On 20 February 2023 passage was closed until 16:00 while avalanches were brought down, and the reopening time depended on the volume of the slide. Allow a spare day. check for your date

- There are no high passes on the northern road, but check the winter timetable on the day. The train to Balykchy is seasonal. check for your date
- Song-Kol and Tash Rabat
- The dates of the winter closure of the road to the lake and to the caravanserai change every year. Ask CBT Kochkor or Naryn.
- A calendar of the passes
- There is no single opening calendar. Look at recent announcements from the Ministry of Emergency Situations, the traffic police (GUOBDD) and the Ministry of Transport about the particular road.
