Traveller’s question

What to pack for Kyrgyzstan: lists by season and type of trip

The main rule for Kyrgyzstan is layers. It can be hot in the valley by day, while at around 3,000 m the nights are cold even in summer, and snow in the mountains is possible in any month. Below are lists by type of trip: take the one that suits you and add the general sections on the first-aid kit, documents, money and connectivity. The lists are practical: they draw on health and safety advice from government services and on experience of mountain routes, so adapt them to yourself. The medical points are no substitute for a doctor’s advice.

General principle

How to use the lists

You do not need to take everything. Choose your type of trip and check it against the general sections.

Layers instead of one thick jacket
A base layer, insulation and a windproof. That makes it easier to adjust to the heat in the valley and the cold on the pass. Weather in the mountains changes quickly, and snow is possible at altitude even in summer (FCDO).
Luggage for the trek
If you go into the mountains after the city, leave surplus things at your guesthouse: agree the storage in writing in advance. For more, see the independent travel guide. check for your date
What you can buy on the spot
Bishkek and Karakol have shops and markets, but the sizes and quality of technical clothing are limited, and medicines may be unavailable. Bring special items (boots, a sleeping bag, a waterproof membrane jacket) with you.
Weight
On horse and rafting routes a soft bag is more convenient than a rigid suitcase. Check the weight limit with the operator.

Summer without the mountains

Summer in the cities and at Issyk-Kul

Bishkek, Karakol, the beaches and day trips. Hot by day, cooler in the evening, especially by the water.

A hike without an overnight stay

Mountains in summer: a one-day hike

Ala-Archa, the Karakol gorges, Jeti-Oguz and the like. It is warm in the valley, but windy and possibly rainy higher up.

A hike with overnight stays

Mountains in summer: a multi-day hike

Ala-Kol, Altyn-Arashan, Song-Kol. On top of the day list, add what you need at night at 2,600–3,500 m.

On horseback

A horse trek

Song-Kol, Tash Rabat, Chatyr-Kol. Your things travel in bags on a horse or in a support vehicle; ask the operator.

Spring and autumn

The shoulder seasons: April–May, September–October

The valleys are still, or already, warm, the mountains are cold, and passes can be closed by snow. The weather changes quickly.

The cold season

Winter and skiing

Ski resorts, winter roads, cold. Check hire and conditions with the resort.

Health

First-aid kit

Canada advises taking a first-aid kit, especially if you leave the big cities, and the FCDO warns that some medicines may be unavailable. The list is general and is no substitute for a doctor’s advice.

Before you leave

Documents

Keep copies separate from the originals and save them offline on your phone.

In brief

Money and connectivity

The details are in the independent travel guide: here is only what is worth having to hand.

Get in touch
A local SIM or eSIM and offline maps. On remote trails the signal is weak or absent (FCDO, USA). Details: Connectivity in the guide. check for your date
Backup
A power bank, a spare cable, a paper copy of addresses and contacts, and tell your family and friends your route.

Short answers

Frequently asked questions

What footwear do I need for Ala-Kol?

Trekking boots or sturdy trainers with a lugged sole and waterproofing, and spare dry socks. The trail is stony and in places wet, so thin city shoes are not suitable.

Do I need a sleeping bag if I sleep in a yurt?

Often not, but it depends on the camp. Ask in advance whether blankets and mattresses are provided, and bring a light liner or a sleeping bag in case of cold nights.

What is essential for a horse trek?

Insurance covering horse riding, sturdy trousers, closed shoes, a soft bag, gloves and sun protection. A helmet if you are not sure of your skills.

Can I buy equipment in Karakol or Bishkek?

The basics are available, but the choice and sizes are limited. It is better to bring technical items (boots, a jacket, a sleeping bag).

Should I take medicines for altitude sickness?

Only on a doctor’s advice, in advance. They are no substitute for a gradual gain in altitude and descending if symptoms appear.

What clothes should I take to Issyk-Kul in summer?

Light covering clothes, a warm layer for the evening, a swimsuit, a hat and sunscreen. For evenings and trips to the jailoo, add a fleece.

Do I need plug adapters?

Kyrgyzstan uses type C and F sockets, 220–230 V, 50 Hz. European plugs fit; plugs from the United Kingdom, the USA and Canada need an adapter; for 120 V appliances, check the label on the device.

How much cash should I take into the mountains?

Work out the whole stretch without a card: transport, overnight stays, food, services, and add a reserve. Do not count on an ATM on the trail.
